NJ...I don't know why you would call Eli a can't miss, I don't consider any QB taken in the first 10 pics a can't miss, because there are twice as many who have failed as there have succeeded.
With that, I think the Chargers did what they had to do. They certainly made a good trade, because NY's #1 next year could very easily be a top 5 pick. That is a bad team, worse if they start Eli.
As far as the Chargers picking a QB first, I am absolutely against picking a QB in the 1st round. Obviously Gallery was gone, so they could not address their immediate need at OLT. But they could have traded down again and still picked up a top 10 pick and another 2nd round pick.
The Charger's have so many holes it's scary. A rookie QB with this offensive line will spell another disaster year. I'll laugh if Drew Brees is the starter this year, the team goes 4-12, and he takes the blame AGAIN.
As far as their draft goes, the Chargers made a great trade with the Giants, but IMO flunked until the 7th round, when they finally addressed their offensive line needs. Their 2nd and two 3rd round pics were a half-round to two-full rounds too high (Nick Hardwick and Nate Kaeding were not two of the top 70 picks in this draft, and Igor is a project with potential). Phillips and Ball were solid picks, but then of course the Chargers drafted a kid in the 6th round (Ryan Krause) that they absolutely could have signed as a free agent, when they could have drafted Kelly Butler, an offensive tackle most draft guys had as a top 5 tackle! I have no idea why they needed this project, when they have three other tight ends / HB types that get the job done.
The coup for the Chargers could be if they let Mike WIlliams into the supplemental draft. If that occurs, they addressed their WR needs, and still should have a top 5 pick available for next year, as NY and SD will be two of the worst teams in 2004
